It’d be the first edition, released in 1985, and he’d march his, say, chaotic evil wu jen – a lawlessly eccentric spellcaster– across the exoticizing fever dream of Kara-Tur. In a hypothetical spin-off called Dungeons & Dragons & Poets, I can picture Pound playing Oriental Adventures. For most of the major critical theorists, I stooped to Wikipedia. Acting on FOMO, I assigned myself some extra reading: a little bit of Aristotle – in Chinese translation, so it felt virtuous. When I was trying to get my Mandarin up to speed, they were mainlining canonical texts – the white people kind, from Plato to Foucault. I started reading it because, in undergrad, a lot of my friends were people who all met in a Great Books program, without me. My favorite cheat sheet for the western canon was this webcomic called Dungeons & Dragons & Philosophers: Simone de Beauvoir running a game for Foucault, Derrida, Kant, and her real-life partner Jean-Paul Sartre. We all have our guilty pleasures, I guess. Despite my blood and all my historical training, I can’t help but be moved when white, Anglophone poets write about Confucius. I’ve got this sense of unease that I’m really just an Orientalist of the old school, given to flights of irresponsible lyricism over the Middle Kingdom. Maybe more reasonably, since I was born in China – though I’ve spent far less of my life there than De Mailla, who read better classical Chinese, I’m sure. I’m a historian of China, a PhD candidate trying to ink over with citations and cleverness all the blanks of what I still don’t know. It’s this automatic sparking of feeling, like an electric current – so easy it feels cheap. The lines act on me like the mechanical dip of a switch, that makes the circuitry in my nerves and muscles dance just right. I don’t know why this bit of poetry always gets me, but the fact that they do feels overdetermined. The poem’s speaker, who remembers historians leaving blanks? That was Confucius. There are blanks in the narrative – presumably for the things they didn’t know: both Pound and his source, the Jesuit scholar Joseph-Anne-Marie de Moyriac de Mailla, whose name was as long as the 12-volume history he wrote from the mission field in Beijing. They offer the famously Sinophile poet’s fractured, free versey take on imperial Chinese history, from the mythical, deep-BC sage-emperors to a century into the final dynasty. These four lines come from Canto XIII, from a poem cycle usually called the China Cantos. They go like this:Ī day when the historians left blanks in their writings But there’s this handful of lines from Ezra Pound that always make me feel like there’s a fist beneath my breastplate, pressing into the wet pink walls of my chest. I’m not the kind of person who gets sappy over poetry.

Like many other performers, Smeck endorsed a number of instruments by various manufacturers over the years, but is probably best known for the line of Harmonies introduced in 1927 with the pear-shaped Vita-Uke. As I was on my way out the door after one of my most recent visits, I spotted an early 80s Harmony “Flying V,” and immediately stopped in my tracks.Scott Baxendale has been building custom hand made guitars since 1974. Smeck’s name would be associated with Harmony instruments until near the end of the company’s run in 1973.It has always amused me that one of the great tempests in the teapot of guitardom has been the legendary “lawsuit” of the 1970s. It has a few bumps and bruises and repaired cracks as shown in the photos. Well, in a way, that’s what happened to me and this 1965 Teisco TRG-2L guitar! :D Answer: The Harmony Roy Smeck ukuleles came in a few different iterations over the years. Odd.What is it about the Japanese and the Ventures? Smeck was a talented instrumentalist who played guitar, banjo, ukulele, and lap steel guitar, earning the sobriquet “Wizard of the Strings.” Smeck made quite a few recordings and starred in part of the first “sound on disk” movie that was released in 1926. Yet, as I look at the keepers in my collection, I’ve only kept one guitar with more than four knobs, and none with more than two pickups. At least that’s been my repeated experience over the last quarter century or so of playing guitar detective. In one mission, you are tasked to sneak into a British naval base and sink some big ships. It would be gratifying to at least report that the scripted missions are designed to create the illusion of big theatre war, but sadly, that is not the case either. After all, it's almost a standard feature in the flight sim arena. With the technology available today and a full-price tag, it is really quite reasonable to expect one. I haven't even found any random events of significance. The missions are fully scripted, every vessel coded into the script. This calls for a dynamic environment in fact, it is screaming for one, but unfortunately, Silent Hunter II doesn't deliver. This means simulating the dark and lonely battlefield experience of searching for pray and setting up attacks only to find unexpected factors ruining your plans and forcing you into quick decision making. A submarine simulator should ideally be able to simulate not only the operation of the sub itself but also the experience of going to war in one. The problems start with the missions themselves. Unfortunately, Silent Hunter II is another argument for this theory. There has been a bit of a trend lately to downscale and rush the release of sims that have been in development for a long time - a way for the publishers to cut their losses in a faded simulation market, probably. The basic game design is straightforward you are a German U-boat commander during World War II who is assigned missions, gradually progressing through the war and onto more advanced submarine types. Well, it's finally arrived - so let's take a look. WWII sub sims are even more unusual so many people have been following the development of Silent Hunter II with high anticipation. Some of us still recall when our nights were spent playing Gato behind a monochrome amber screen in the early eighties. You will need to install the Ubisoft Connect for PC application in order to run this content. We don't see many submarine sims nowadays, but they have been around since the very dawn of simming. Depending on his approach the player can open new locations with upgrade and resupply possibilities, while the Allied response adjusts dynamicallyĪutomatically added to your Ubisoft Connect for PC library for download. Player actions will impact the outcome of battles and the scenario evolution in campaign. With the help of an advanced order system the player will interact with the submarine crew, watch them doing their daily jobs and experience the tension & fear inside the U-boot.For the first time the player will walk through highly detailed submarines in FPS view and be able to access every inside & outside part of the U-boot.Silent Hunter 5 raises the levels of interactivity and immersion inside the U-boat and outside. Can you do better than the best U-boat aces? Features Operate against Allied shipping on a vast area all across the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea and participate in famous encounters with strong enemy warships. For the first time the player will be able to play & feel as U-boat captain leading his crew from a first person view in a true dynamic campaign. Silent Hunter 5 hails the return of the number one submarine simulation. Rhino.Inside is an open-source technology that embeds Rhino+Grasshopper inside another application’s memory space. Thus the problem of how to get Rhino 3D models to have a longer, more fruitful, and continued existence through the BIM-centric stages of today’s typical AEC workflow. And in that process, Autodesk has taken up a notable market leadership position, at least in the United States. While this nearly two-decade evolution has happened, something else has transpired in AEC: BIM has become standard practice for large and mid-sized architecture firms around the world. In fact, “computational design” (another generalized term for AAD) has evolved since the early aughts from being a designer’s new “BFF” for form-making to today’s pathway to 1:1 digitally-driven prototyping. (see: Architosh, “Viewpoint: How BIM is Crushing the Art of Architecture and How to Stop It,” ).ĭespite this, and partly to address it, global elite marquee architecture firms have long adopted the most advanced 3D modeling technology, from Gehry’s Digital Project to the much more pervasive Rhino 3D with its attendant Grasshopper “algorithms-aided design” ( AAD) environment. Theses crafted in poignant terms with powerful examples illustrate one thing most architects have known all along: the human imagination greatly outstrips the capacity of 100 percent of all digital tools. SOME HAVE CLAIMED THAT BIM TOOLS HAVE STUNTED Architecture. The playset also allows the Batmobile from Batmobile: The Penguin Chase (76181, not included) to be driven onto the ramps ready for repairs.
